In a very dramatic fashion the Berkeley Golden Bears also managed to win game 2 of the San Francisco Bay Area Championship series and extended their lead to 2 games to 0 over San Francisco Cal Heat.
As expected and promised by Cal Heat the second game was very different from the first one. Cal Heat went to work right away and showed a very physical presence right from the start. On the other side the Golden Bears were struggling to penetrate the solid defense of Cal Heat, but also managed to keep Cal Heat from scoring. This resulted in only a few goals on both sides during the first 10 minutes. However after that the Golden Bears offense started to get rolling and consequentially they were able to build a 10 to 7 lead at halftime.
At the beginning of the second half with their backs against the wall, Cal Heat came out steaming . While at the same time the Golden Bears, feeling a little bit too sure about them, started to get sloppy and not decisive enough in the defense. Cal Heat scored 4 unanswered goals in only 4 Minutes and took an 11 to 10 lead. This was a wakeup call for the Golden Bears and they at least managed to stop Cal Heat’s advances. In the following the lead kept changing back and force consistently, due to the fact that both teams were not very focused and produced many turnovers. However none of the teams could take any advantage of it. Two minutes before the end of the game, the scoring being tied at 18 a piece, the Golden Bears had the ball and the chance to win the game. They took their time, but didn’t manage to score. On the contrary 10 seconds before the end they missed a fairly easy shot and gave Cal Heat another chance to get the win. But Cal Heat was not able to use it either and so the game ended in a tie.
In the following penalty shootout between 3 players from each team, the Golden Bears managed to convert both of their first two penalty shots, while Cal Heat missed both of their shots and therefore gave the victory to the Golden Bears with a final score of 20 to 18.
Although Cal heat didn’t get the win, they showed that they can keep up with the Golden Bears. Therefore they are already eager to finally beat the Golden Bears in Game 3 on December 16th 2009.
