First Game of Youth League a Success

On Wednesday, October 5th, at the Lycée Français de San Francisco, the kickoff of the first ever season of the Bay Area Youth Team Handball League took place. It was a sunny and very windy afternoon, but everyone involved was excited about the game and the historic implications of such an event.

Before even the game started it was emotional to see younger kids, of elementary school age, playing Team Handball at their recess, arguing among themselves whether or not dribbling was allowed, and making shots with a ball bigger than their hands. It was a scene that would get burned in our memories.

Once the game got going it was evident that both teams, Lycée and Sterne, were up for the challenge and they were not going to stop chasing the win. Throughout the game the difference was of two goals up for Lycée, but Sterne kept fighting back and getting into reach, when at the half point of the second half the game got tied and it could have gone either way.

Sterne called a time out then and made some tactical moves to try to secure the win, its goalie was a big part of the game being close until the end, but then Lycée’s number 15 got a couple of fast break opportunities that sealed the fate of the game and they went on to win by that difference.

This is just the beginning of the season, more games will come, keep an eye for the schedule on the League’s webpage and we’ll keep you updated about the games and standings.
