SF CalHeat Off To The Midwest

Starting tomorrow, our men’s team will be competing at the Michael Lipov Memorial Cup in Chicago, alongside seven other teams from all around the country. This tournament has a rich history and often brings some of the best of US handball. Traditionally hosted in October, the event had to be postponed to early in December due to COVID-19 restrictions, and we are very happy to finally be competing against some of our rivals.

Despite the absence of a few leading members, our men’s squad will try to reiterate the 2018 performance and collect a second trophy in the Windy City. But it won’t be easy and many teams will aspire for the championship. This year, our team will face Miami Inter, Minnesota Team Handball, and Chicago Inter II in the preliminary phase of the competition (round robin). In the event our team would claim one of the first two spots in the group, they’d crossover with either New York Athletic Club (winner in 2019 and 2017), the host, Chicago Inter, Miami Storms or Milwaukee United. Needless to say we will follow these developments very closely. The schedule goes as follows – all in Central Standard Time (CST):

Friday December 3 at 4:30 PM vs. Miami Inter

Friday December 3 at 8:00 PM vs. Chicago Inter

Saturday December 4 at 1:40 PM vs. Minnesota Team Handball

Saturday December 4 at 5:30 PM (or 6:45 PM) – semifinals

Sunday December 5 at 1:00 PM – final

Unfortunately, this year’s tournament edition won’t have a women’s division due to conflicting timing with other leagues and the inability of some teams to travel. We will see our women’s team competing at the upcoming 2022 California Cup (February 4-6).
