The 2020 IHF Super Globe is postponed

On July 16, the IHF decided to postpone the 2020 IHF Men’s Super Globe, as well as the 2020 IHF Women’s Youth (U18) World Championship.

The 2020 IHF Super Globe was initially planned on October 6-10 in Dammam, Saudi Arabia, and only FC Barcelona (defending champion), SC Zamalek (Egypt, winner of the Africa men’s super cup) and Al-Arabi (Qatar, winner of the Asian Club League Championship) had qualified so far. The competition was expected to feature a team from North America, but the regional qualifier, planned in Lake Placid, NY in June was cancelled due to the state of the COVID-19 pandemic in the United States (and in the State of New York).

Our men’s team had high hopes to qualify for the competition a year after winning the US National Championship. The team was eager to match up against the best from the continent and follow on the footsteps of New York City Team Handball Club. “This was a hard one. We dreamed about the IHF Super Globe from the moment we claimed the national title. We knew the competition to get to Saudi Arabia would be tough, but we had a very good shot” – says our men’s team head coach Danilo Rojevic. The team’s dreams aren’t over though, and they will be ready to battle whenever handball is allowed to return to competition in the US. “It was on our agenda obviously, but it’s not a dead dream. One day or another we will get our chance to qualify for the IHF Super Globe.” says captain Slave Jovanovski.

The IHF will now regroup to find a solution with all stakeholders involved and provide updates on the competitions in due course.
